ISI Building: A redecorated shed?

On March 19th, Drexel University presented plans for their new URBN Center of Design, to be housed in the iconic former ISI Building by Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates (3501 Market Street, 1978).  This quintessential “decorated shed” is an important early work of postmodernism and a cherished University City landmark. The principal south elevation, with its polychrome tile patterns and porcelain enamel signage, will be preserved intact, but many in the audience expressed concern with other aspects of the design.  Minneapolis architects Meyer Scherer & Rockcastle propose a radical reconfiguration of the building’s east and north facades, introducing large expanses of glass and exposing structural members at the building’s beveled southeast corner entryway.

These alterations would compromise the integrity of a design that is just as significant to the history of twentieth century architecture as Frank Furness’s Centennial Bank, lovingly restored by Drexel as the Paul Peck Alumni Center, is to the nineteenth century.  Vice President of University Facilities Robert Francis is accepting comments on the design at robert.a.francis@drexel.edu.  We encourage you to share your concern.  The Alliance's comments to Dr. Francis can be viewed here.
